Back To School/Athletic Club in Tromso
By: Paul | August 26th, 2009So yesterday was my 22nd birthday, and I arrived at lovely Roanoke College for my senior year. Classes began today, and I only had two so that was easy. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, though, I’ll be taking 3 classes which amount to a total of 7 hours. Unfortunately because of the packed schedule on those days, it doesn’t look like I’ll be around much to blog- and this includes Athletic’s game tomorrow.

Like me, Athletic did some traveling yesterday, arriving in Tromso for tomorrow’s next Europa League fixture. I found a preview on goal.com, and I take issue to this statement: “There was to be no comeback in Camp Nou on Sunday however as Athletic were defeated 3-0 by the European champions and once again their credentials were called into question.”
Credentials called into question? Did Lucas Brown even see the lineup that Athletic started? It is clear that Athletic weren’t playing for the win due to the lineup they sent out and it’s even clearer that those players were not up to the challenge of Barcelona. I agree that Athletic had a poor showing on defense, but this game is not one that should be a marker of the whole team. Outside of using the Supercup second leg as a barometer of the whole team, I agree with the preview and it’s worth reading.
Twenty players have been named for the squad: Iraizoz, Armando, Iago; Iraola, Castillo, Amorebieta, Ocio, Ustaritz, Llorente, Toquero, De Marcos, Susaeta, Yeste, Javi Martinez, Muniain, Etxeberria, Iturraspe, Gurpegi, Koikili and San Jose.
I will agree with goal.com on one thing, Athletic’s likely XI: Iraizoz; Iraola, Ocio, Amorebieta, Castillo; Susaeta, Javi Martínez, Yeste, Muniain; De Marcos, Llorente.
The game will be played at 1pm Eastern US time, 8pm Bilbao time. Streams can be found here, links will be posted closer to game time, so be patient.
Even though I won’t be able to catch the game, I will be around with a wrap either tomorrow night or Friday.
AUPA ATHLETIC!

Take what they say on Goal.com with a pinch of salt. Sometimes I even wonder if they watch the matches they do player ratings for. Like you said Paul the starting XI that was put out was due to tonights match.

We’re through but boy that was shameful. There’s no other word to describe the team’s performance.
In spite of it all (I guess) Aupa Athletic!

Zorionak, Paul!
Well… it looks like we’re in the Europa League. We win 3-2 on aggregate.
Oh and Lol.com has never gotten anything correct… not unless it were about Real Madrid.

We’re through, thats all that matters. Some European Football should be fun this season, lets hope these qualifiers got us ready for La Liga.

@hmmm
You really think so? I don’t.The team’s gone through, yes, but they didn’t deserve it. They seem incapable of stringing two passes together which, you know, could be forgiven if they were able to defend but – the *sad* fact of the matter is – that they couldn’t do that either. Thank god (figure of speech like) for that penalty because we were incapable of doing anything of our own backs. Shameful stuff!
We looked like a second division B team and maybe that’s where we’re heading if we don’t start to play some football.
