Caparros returns to Galicia

By: Elisa | April 12th, 2008

Little Harrotxu

The prodigal son, Joaquin Caparros, goes back to his old stomping grounds where he managed the team for two years and was not exactly successful. It should be a very interesting tie. Considering all the smack in the press or created by the press trying to stir things up between Depor and their old manager. Well Caparros is one of those managers like Lotina that has oodles of experience. We call them career managers in La Liga. But our man Caparros has been doing it longer. Is there an edge for Athletic? Will there be a lot of tension in the match? We shall see…

A brief match preview:

My favorite Bilbao youngster, Markel Susaeta will not be playing vs. Baby Depor. He played 18 hours ago for Bilbao Athletic, the Segunda B youth squad. The team needed reinforcements vs Segunda leader Ponferradina and there are Football regulations about about a minimum 24 hour period break between games. Hmmmmmmm….I hope we aren’t getting too cocky now.

Dropping like flies…

Injury prone, party boy Asier Del Horno is out for three weeks. It appears the same muscular problems are creeping up again. He left training in pain. Ouch!

Central midfielder Pablo Orbaiz is out for the rest of the season. His right ankle was operated on and he is in recovery. Good luck Pablo!

Good news! After a two year ban, central midfielder Carlos Gurpegui is back and eager to play. It’ll take a little while for Garpegui to get into the first squad, but we really need the reinforcements. He hasn’t been called up against Depor, but he is definitely a future option.

Travelling to La Coruña for Athletic:

Armando, Aranzubia, Ustaritz, Amorebieta, Aitor Ocio, Koikili, Ander Murillo, Iraola, Garmendia, Yeste (quick recovery, eh?), Gabilondo, David Cuellar, Iñaki Muñoz, Aduriz, Javi Martinez, David Lopez, Exteberria (el capitan), and Llorente

Deportivo: Auoate, Munua, (the two have kissed and made up) Manuel Pablo, Lopo, Barragan, Coloccini, Pablo Amo, Adrian Lopez, De Guzman, Sergio, Filipe, Juan Rodgriguez, Wilhelmsson, Lafita, Verdu, Xisco, Valeron, Riki, and Taborda

Hmmm no Guardado, but Xisco is on fire. (Aitor and Fernando - hatchet man 1 and hatchet man 2 - stop him in his tracks! But no reds please!)

One last thing… Germany’s Der Spiegel published a nice article/homage to the Basque Bastion and Athletic’s philosophy. Nice to see our club get some love and respect in Europe.

Hasta!

what happened to Athletic - 3-0? I didn’t see that coming, I thought you guys would do better than that at the Riazor.

Hate to rub salt in the wound but Coloccini musta heve enjoyed that goal after complaininh that Caparros never let him go forward..

I think it’s the case of believing in your own hype or press. We got cocky. I can’t believe that we let Susaeta play with the youth squad in Segunda B. I can’t believe that we thought we could park the bus and it would work. I’ll get into it more on my blog. Right now I am a bit miffed and disappointed, but I gotta move on.
