Down on Penalties
By: Paul | July 19th, 2009Another pre-season game was played yesterday vs. Anderlecht, and Athletic go down on penalties. Ok, so they lost. I’m not too worried (yet). This is just the pre-season, and as long as the players are getting in shape and getting some practice in before the new season, that’s all that really matters to me.
Good news, though: Our new signing, Oscar de Marcos, made it onto the scoresheet in this game. Also, the squad was different from the last game, which tells me that Caparros (like me) isn’t really looking for a win necessarily, but he wants to warm his squad up for the upcoming season. Good plan, I’d say. Gurpegi got onto the scoresheet later on in the game as well, and Armando did manage to make a decent save on a penalty kick.
Llorente is still missing from the squad, but my guess is that he got an extended break after playing for Spain in the Confederations Cup- hopefully we’ll be seeing him soon.
Here was Athletic’s squad for the game:
Armando, Eneko, Etxeita, Ustaritz, Castillo (68′ Koikili), Orbaiz (46′ Iturraspe), David López (46′ Gurpegi), De Marcos (80′ Susaeta), Ion Vélez (46′ Muniain), Yeste, Etxeberria (72′ Zubiaurre)
The only unused sub was Iraizoz.
Athletic’s next friendly will be played on July 22 against Segunda División B side San Roque. I see Athletic winning this game easily, and after this fixture is the first game of Athletic’s Europa League odyssey.

I would have preferred to see that last one scored

That was a nice pass Etxeberria did for De Marcos’ goal.
