End of Season Score Card
By: Elisa | May 24th, 2008It’s been a helter skelter year for Athletic Bilbao, but all in all a satisfying one. It’s looking up, as I have stated in previous posts.
This end of season, instead of nail biting, swearing, suffering and agony at the end with the threat of relegation looming, it was pink elephants, chocolate bunnies and intertoto dreams.
Well intertoto belongs to Deportivo La Coruña and the days of leaking 65 goals a season, are behind Los Leones.
Here’s my End of Season Score Card….
Best Player: Fernando Amorebieta (defensive stud extraordinaire!)
Most Improved: Fernando Llorente (yes our big boy up top can score!)
Worst Player(s): Asier Del Horno and Fran Yeste – two unnecessary divas who don’t rank in my book. Asier has packed his bags and is back off to Valencia. Don’t call us, we’ll call you. (unless he’s free!) And according to Caparros, Fran Yeste has seen his psychologist and has come to his senses.
Best Transfer: Aitor Ocio (the hunk from Sevilla has made a fearsome pair with Fernan in central defense)
Best Canterano: Markel Susaeta (promoted this year to the first team, our fantasista on the wings is pure magico!) What other club can claim a canterano that changes the face of the team.
Worst Transfer: Asier Del Horno (overhyped, overpartied, and overpaid)
Best Moment of the Season: Doing the double vs Valencia and getting Koeman sacked!
Worst Moment of the Season: Missing out on the Intertoto… Europe is part of our DNA…soon.
Honorable mentions: Joseba Exteberria and Andoni Iraola both had impressive seasons. It was great to see them play so well and lead on the pitch. Javi Martinez – the kid is building a consistent, solid game. It’s great to see him flourish, in style. Our Manager Joaquin Caparros, the man who can, who is building slowly a balanced team without leveraging our future in debt. No easy task in the modern football world.
Well that’s all folks!
