New Season, New Threadz (and a bit heavy on the photos)
By: Paul | July 8th, 2009
Finally, I get my kit porn and my urges can be relieved! Umbro and Athletic held a press conference earlier today officially unveiling their new kits to the world and, I have to say, I am pleased with their work.

The home kit looks very good. While it lacks a “real” collar, the tricolor on the neck looks very classy. The shorts (finally) have a touch of red, and the socks have the same tricolor as the neck which looks very nice as well. The club seems to have gone back to using a gold border on the badge, as opposed to black and, in my view, this gives the kit a “classier” look. While most Athletic fans are unhappy about the club finally allowing a shirt sponsor (I’m with them), the Petronor logo is incorporated better than last year’s version.
The away kits also look sharp. If you aren’t familiar with Athletic’s history, they used to wear these colors back in their early days so here’s a nod to the club’s history. These kits are very “Blackburn Rovers”, and when Bilbao switched to their red and white they did it as a nod to their English founders from Sunderland and/or Southampton. As the “Hello! We Are Football” blog points out, Umbro makes the kits for all three of these English teams and Bilbao as well. Not really important- but and interesting little tidbit nonetheless.
Finally, we have the goalkeeper kits. They look stupid, but who really cares- they’re goalkeeper kits.

There you have it folks- Athetic Club Bilbao’s new kits for the 09/10 season. Now, I will leave you with a photo from the team’s training. Here’s Yeste all decked out in the new threadz (and Orbaiz and Aitor Ocio in stupid training gear). Bust out the tissues and enjoy (I hope this warning wasn’t too late).

That away kit looks like it should have Red Bull on it instead of Petronor.

I must say, I hated the new kits the first time I saw them but maybe it’s growing on me as I’m liking them quite a bit now…
I’m one of those who didn’t want a shirt sponsor, but I suppose if we must have one, then at least it’s a Basque company.
Those goalkeeper kits will make Iraizoz blend in well with the grass.
I quite like the training gear actually. When I saw this post, I thought for a second that Iraola was wearing a third kit or what… speaking of third kit, I’m going to miss the ones from last season although they were barely used.

I agree, the shirt sponsor is something I would rather not see, but, hey, if you have seen the one that Sunderland has this season you’d be happy we’re not them.
I like the training gear as well and the Umbro line in general. My only complaint about the kits, though, is the blue stripe across the ass part of the shorts. If the home kit has that too, that wouldn’t look too great either.
Also, by third kits from last year are you talking about the all black kit? That is easily among my favorite kits ever, it was also used as Athletic’s away kit in 2006-2008 (here’s a picture of these kits: http://www.athletic-club.net/fotogaleria2/galeria5906.jpg)

No, the the black kits were used as away kits. The third kits from last season were white with bits of red and green as seen here: http://www.miathletic.com/wiki/Equipaci%F3n_Del_Athletic_Club_De_Bilbao
