New Signing: Oscar de Marcos
By: Paul | July 11th, 2009
According to various Spanish news sources (such as this one- it’s in Spanish), Athletic have bought Alavés midfielder Oscar de Marcos. Depending on where you read, the transfer fee is either free, 300,000 Euros, 360,000 Euros, or Alavés paid 350,000 Euros- or maybe my Spanish really sucks and Google Translate cannot help me. I don’t know much about the player, but he’s only 20 and scored 3 goals (on 3 shots, incidentally) in 20 games (10 started).
So, he can’t be all that bad, can he?

According to the article he scored 5 goals. Time will tell if he’s worth the “close to” €300.000 that they paid for him. He’s quite young, he hasn’t played much, and he’s fresh from Segunda- but I’m hoping they’ll test him out a bit during the pre-season. Hopefully he’ll be a revelation.

two signings so far but I dont think they would help us much, Cerio and this guy are surplus unless we sell some players I mean our formation is:
iraizoz
iraola ocio amorebieta koi
Lopez Orbaiz Martinez Yeste
Llorente Toquerosubs:
armando
murillo Ustaritz Etxeita Balenziaga
Garmendia Gabilondo Gurpegi Susaeta
Velez Etxeberria
reserves: Munoz, Iturraspe, Etxebarria, Goni, Boveda
I think we should loan out Etxebarria, Goni, Boveda and Iturraspe as they are still young and sell Munoz, he’s 31 and doesn’t play, maybe now that we got a striker velez could leave too but i would like him to stay as we have to play in three competitionsPosted from

When you only field Basque players, obviously your options in the transfer market are going to be limited. I guess all you can do really is hope for the best!

Well, Joseba Llorente would be very nice- I read another article recently saying that Caparros wanted to buy Arteta, J. Llorente, and an Osasuna player whose name escapes me, but the upper management wouldn’t provide the cash. They say that they will not sign non-Basques because the club’s identity is more important than staying up, but if they’re not going to provide the cash to sign star Basque players, it almost seems like they WANT to be playing in Segunda next year.
I think De Cerio is a good signing, not great but he should be a decent player and overall I’m happy that Athetic got him. This guy I’m unsure about but I guess we’ll have to wait and see exactly how he does

its impossible to play in the segunda, we have great class on board, our players are wanted and yet we fended off interest from the greatest of clubs, I’m optimistic but I thought now that we entered Europa League we should at least have some more cash and with sponsoring and a couple of sales not even llorente was afforded, I’m happy too with De Cerio and Marcos.

I don’t really believe that Athletic will be going down any time soon necessarily, but I do think that if they want to have long-term success they will need to spend some money on star Basque players. If they don’t, then it will only be a matter of time until they do suffer the drop.
