We Were Rubbish**

By: Elisa | October 8th, 2008

Despair, Despair, Despair, Athletic just started on the fearsome foursome run and looked frickin awful vs Sevilla. If something doesn’t happen and quick, it’s a relegation battle all over again. Yes it’s still early days, but if we couldn’t beat Malaga and Recreativo after a grueling pre-season, well, we may need a bloody miracle to survive.

My grandmother would have done more vs Sevilla. This team lacks confidence. The Basques lack the will to attack and take chances. There’s no cohesion nor a belief in the team or themselves. I blame President Macua and Caparrós. Our transfer business was abysmal to say the least. Why oh why would you get rid of Aduriz and stack all the pressure on Llorente, Velez and Extebe? Extebe is getting older and injury prone and Velez is too rough around the edges. We needed to open the bank for one quality Vasco, but no. So we do our best with players, new to la Primera, who are having a difficult time cutting it. And now midfielder Javi Martinez is injured and will be out for a month. ARGH!!

Next up is an on fire Barça in San Mamés. It looks rather bleak. Too many pre-season games have taken their toll. The purpose of pre-season is to build form and fitness. Frankly, I don’t see either right now. Can we get a point at home? Can we call up the rivalry and animosity that normally festers when we face the Cataláns? Well we oughta be starting something and fast or we need a new leader to lead the team and the club. How long can we endure the suffering before the levee breaks? Maybe until Xmas.

Let’s hope that last week’s thrashing was a rude awakening. Let’s also hope that there are three other teams that are worse than Los Leónes. We’ve got to take each game one by one, but the fans and players are feeling very low. We were supposed to build on last year’s success. We were supposed to solidify our position in the league and challenge for the Copa Del Rey and possibly Europe. Well time to get pragmatic and grind out the results. The future is now.

No, we were just good. If you converted your chances at the beginning of the match, it would have been totally different.

By the way, I saw you commenting on the Valencia blog and referred to them as “us”… Who’s really your team? lol

Yet early days, though they seem to be awash in such deep shades of grey. Unfortunately with the upcoming schedule it may just turn those greys to deep black.

I’m surprised that Athletic are playing so poorly. Mind you last season was a more dour La Liga exercise in 38 weeks of 20 teams jostling for table relevance, so that may have inflated expectations slightly. But still, to go from mid table competence to cellar dwelling points scavengers is a bit surprising for me.

Hope Athletic turns things around. I don’t think the winter transfer window will prove to be an exercise in salvation as teams almost always overpay when doing some winter shopping.

    Cheers.

Hey Anthony – My no. 1 team is actually Real Madrid, my 2nd team is Athletic as my great grans are Basque. I support La Furia Roja so I have a soft spot for Valencia. And I love La Liga and do a weekly podcast called Forza Futbol (www.forzafutbol.com) so I always support Spanish clubs in Europe. So there you go. LOL

As to Athletic, it is early, but things are looking very gloomy and I for one am not feeling very hopeful. The problem at the back with a leaky defense of two years ago is back. Add to that that we can’t finish and you have big problems. But let’s wait and see, there is a lot of potential especially with the youngsters. We just gotta build that confidence and get on a good run of games so we can at least finish mid table like we did last season. Also a good cup run this year will do us good. We also lack leadership on the field, someone to guide the youngsters. We need a new captain, maybe Andoni Iraola who always plays his socks off.
