What Goes Up Must Come Down

Athletic were flying high. Three victories in a row to begin the season, with a chance to make it four in a row for the first time since anybody reading this blog right now was born (if I’m wrong about that, correct me). Yesterday, Athletic had their test against Tenerife. That’s right- after three wins in a row, the game that could make it four was going to be played against Tenerife. Tenerife finished third in the Second Division last year and earned promotion, starting the 09/10 season off with 1 win and 2 losses. This should have been an easy win for Athletic but it wasn’t. Athletic looked like a completely different team- Tenerife kept on probing the back line, they drew more fouls, took more shots, etc. Honestly, if it weren’t for the fact that Athletic were playing against Tenerife I would be surprised that the score was only 1-0. So sure, not all of the regulars were starting but still- Tenerife.
Still, it may be good that the team has been brought down to earth, especially before Saturday’s game which will be played against Sevilla.

We did get to see Athletic’s third kits in action. I like ‘em.

Annoying, buy you’ll see a lot of teams struggle at Tenerife due to the travel. They won their other home game this season, and last time they were in La Liga everyone was dropping points there. That said they’ll lose every game away and likely go down. I’m mostly annoyed we couldn’t hold out for the loss. Any word on if Martinez will be back for Sevilla?

Tenerife is going to be another Mallorca. Good to have gotten the trip there out of the way now I guess. Frustrating to not have at least gotten a point, though.

The game against Tenerife was incredibly frustrating. If it wasn’t for Iraizoz we’d have lost by more than just 1 goal. Although the guys played terribly, I place more blame on Caparrós and his changes to the lineup… he obviously underestimated Tenerife.

Isabel:
I don’t know if I can really blame Caparros for the loss. I think I would have sent out a similar lineup due to the fact that the match schedule right now is a bit more packed. Especially with a game against Sevilla coming up, the game vs Tenerife was the right time to rest key players. I think the main reason behind the loss was complacency; I think that Athletic’s players (and manager, for that matter) were just as confident as I was that if the team left Tenerife with a draw, that would be the worst case scenario. I think this match was a case of the team letting success get to their heads a bit too much.

@ Paul: I blame them both. I don’t think Caparrós should have rested as many players as he did… I think there were maybe 5 or 6 benchwarmers in there.
For sure, the guys got way complacent. The game was terribly painful to watch, not to mention embarrassing… it reminded me exactly why there’s a saying that to be a supporter of Athletic is to be quite used to suffering.
